You are required to pay the taxes for your truck under your name if you decide to put the vehicle on the road within the tax year. The HVUT does not transfer from one owner to the other. So you must file Form 2290 for the purchased vehicle and pay the required HVUT.
If the vehicle you purchased is a privately purchased vehicle and use it in the same month, you do not have to pay taxes for the month of sale. However, the deadline to file your Form 2290 will be the same.
For example, if you buy a privately purchased vehicle and use it in July 2022, the total HVUT amount will not include the tax amount for July. But the deadline to file your Form 2290 return will be on August 31, 2022.
