I bought a used truck this year. Do I still need to pay taxes?

Applicable To
Form 2290 Form 8849 Amendments

You are required to pay the taxes for your truck under your name if you decide to put the vehicle on the road within the tax year. The HVUT does not transfer from one owner to the other. So you must file Form 2290 for the purchased vehicle and pay the required HVUT.

If the vehicle you purchased is a privately purchased vehicle and use it in the same month, you do not have to pay taxes for the month of sale. However, the deadline to file your Form 2290 will be the same.

For example, if you buy a privately purchased vehicle and use it in February 2020, the total HVUT amount will not include the tax amount for February. But the deadline to file your Form 2290 return will be on March 31, 2020.

If you have any questions please contact our outstanding, 100% US-based support team by phone, email, or live chat. We will be happy to help through the filing process.
