The deadline to file your Form 2290 return is the last day of the month following the First Used Month (FUM) of the vehicle. The current tax year begins on July 1, 2022, and ends on June 30, 2023.

Typically, owners/drivers of trucks operate their trucks on the public highways at the start of the new tax year (July). So, the deadline to file Form 2290 for most truckers is on August 31.

For example, if you first used your newly purchased vehicle in January, you must file Form 2290 by the last day of February. File Form 2290 and submit your 2290 payment for your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax on time to avoid penalties and interest. If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, file by the next business day.
