Form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) payment is a federal excise tax that must be paid by taxpayers on an annual basis. Owners/Drives of heavy motor vehicles are required to file Form 2290 and pay HVUT if their vehicle is operated on the public highway and their vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

The tax period to file your return begins July 1 and ends June 30 every year. This return has to be renewed on an annual basis. The deadline to file your return is the last day of the month following your first used month during the tax period.

For example, if you filed a Form 2290 return for a truck on April 14, 2022, for the tax year 2021-2022, and used the truck during July 2022, you have to file your return again within August 30, 2022, for the tax year 2022-2023.
