A name control is a sequence of not more than four characters established when the IRS generates an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for a business. The name control usually comprises the first four characters of your business name. When you apply for an EIN, the name control is created based on the legal representation provided in the Form SS-4 Application for Employer Identification Number.
When you file any return with the IRS, they check for your EIN to see whether it matches your name control. If the EIN and the name control do not match, the IRS considers your business name or EIN to be incorrect and rejects your return.
