Whenever you start using the heavy vehicle on the public roads for the first time, IRS expects you to file Form 2290, Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). The tax amount paid by trucker drivers/owners like you is used to maintain the highways, paving new roadways, and improve road transportation.
Let’s see what the first used month is all about,
The first used month (FUM) of your vehicle is the first month that your vehicle is operated on public highways during the tax year. The current tax year begins on July 1, 2020, and ends on June 30, 2021. You report the FUM using Form 2290. The deadline to file your Form 2290 is the last day of the month subsequent to your first used month. If the last day of the month falls on a weekend or public holiday, you are required to file it by the next business day.
For instance, if you operate your truck for the first time on any day of July 2020, the deadline to file Form 2290 is August 31, 2020.
The section below explains what would be the deadline for filing Form 2290 corresponding to the First Used Month (FUM).
