If you make mistakes while filing your Form 2290, you can file amendments or new returns and get an updated Schedule 1, even though you cannot make changes to your original Schedule 1.
You must file a new Form 2290 return if you make any mistakes in the First Used Month (FUM), tax year, Employer Identification Number (EIN), or business name in your original return. Click here to know more.
You can also file amendments in certain instances to make changes to your return.
The IRS accepts amendments only in the following cases
VIN Correction
If you filed your Form 2290 return with an incorrect VIN, you can amend your return and provide the correct VIN. Click here to know how to file the VIN correction amendment using ExpressTruckTax.
Taxable Gross Weight Increase
If the taxable gross weight of your vehicle increases within the tax year, you must file a Form 2290 amendment to report the new weight category to the IRS. You might be subjected to an additional tax due because of the increase in the weight category. Click here to know how to file the Taxable Gross Weight Increase amendment using ExpressTruckTax.
Mileage Exceeded
If you file Form 2290 return with the vehicle as Suspended, and later the vehicle crosses the mileage limit of 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the tax year, this information must be reported to the IRS and the appropriate HVUT amount must be paid.
